Na verdade, ele não gostava das restrições impostas pela filiação a qualquer escola de pensamento. <br> <br> Escreveu, em 1930, que o tipo de psicologia que ele desenvolvia não aspira a ser uma escola. É isso precisamente o que ela não deseja ser. <br> <br style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"> <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">"Pessoalmente, sempre rejeitei que me dissessem, o que acontece de vez em quando, pelo que me lembro, qual o caminho a seguir – o que, na qualidade de psicólogos, deveríamos fazer, e o que a psicologia, na divina ordem das ciências, tem de fazer”</span> (Woodworth, 1930, p.327). <br> <br> Embora não possamos rotular Woodworth de funcionalista no sentido estrito, sua obra cabe num capítulo sobre o funcionalismo americano por ter ele expresso e refletido uma forma livre de funcionalismo que ainda caracteriza a psicologia nos Estados Unidos.
