O espírito funcionalista da psicologia americana também foi bem representado na vida e na obra de James McKeen Cattell, que influenciou o movimento em prol de uma abordagem prática e orientada para os testes no estudo dos processos mentais. </p> <p style="text-align: justify;">A psicologia de Cattell voltou-se mais para as capacidades humanas do que para o conteúdo consciente e, nesse aspecto, ele se aproxima muito de um funcionalista. Tal como Hall e William James, ele nunca se associou formalmente com o movimento, mas tipificou o espírito funcionalista americano em sua ênfase nos processos mentais em termos de sua utilidade para o organismo, bem como em seu desenvolvimento de testes mentais, hoje uma área importante da psicologia aplicada.<span id="more-6862"></span></p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Cattell nasceu em Easton, Pensilvânia. Bacharelou-se e, 1880 no Lafayette College, presidido pelo pai.
