<div class="blogentry">Sem d�vida, o computador mais famoso daquela �poca
foi o ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator Analyzer and Computer),
constru�do em 1945. O ENIAC era composto por nada menos do que 17.468
v�lvulas, al�m de 1.500 rel�s e um grande n�mero de capacitores,
resistores e outros componentes.<br>

No total, ele pesava 30 toneladas e era t�o volumoso que ocupava um
grande galp�o. Outro grave problema era o consumo el�trico: um PC t�pico
atual, com um monitor LCD, consome cerca de 100 watts de energia,
enquanto o ENIAC consumia incr�veis 200 kilowatts.<br>

Construir esse monstro custou ao ex�rcito Americano 468.000 d�lares da
�poca, que correspondem a pouco mais de US$ 10 milh�es em valores
corrigidos.<br>
<br>
Por�m, apesar do tamanho, o poder de processamento do ENIAC � rid�culo
para os padr�es atuais, suficiente para processar apenas 5.000 adi�es,
357 multiplica�es ou 38 divis�es por segundo. O volume de processamento
do ENIAC foi superado pelas calculadoras port�teis ainda na d�cada de 70
e, hoje em dia, mesmo as calculadoras de bolso, das mais baratas, s�o
bem mais poderosas do que ele.<br>

A id�ia era construir um computador para quebrar c�digos de comunica��o
e realizar v�rios tipos de c�lculos de artilharia para ajudar as tropas
aliadas durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Por�m, o ENIAC acabou sendo
terminado exatos 3 meses depois do final da guerra e foi usado durante a
Guerra Fria, contribuindo por exemplo no projeto da bomba de hidrog�nio.<br>

Se voc� acha que programar em C ou em Assembly � complicado, imagine
como era a vida dos programadores daquela �poca. A programa��o do ENIAC
era feita atrav�s de 6.000 chaves manuais e, ao inv�s de ser feita
atrav�s de teclas, toda a entrada de dados era feita atrav�s de cart�es
de cartolina perfurados, que armazenavam poucas opera�es cada um.<br>
<br>
Uma equipe preparava os cart�es, incluindo as opera�es a serem
realizadas, formando uma pilha, outra ia trocando os cart�es no leitor
do ENIAC, e uma terceira �traduzia� os resultados, tamb�m impressos em
cart�es, para o padr�o decimal.<br>
<br>
O ENIAC tamb�m possu�a s�rios problemas de manuten��o. A cada 5 minutos,
em m�dia, alguma das v�lvulas se queimava, tornando necess�rias
manuten�es freq�entes. A seguir est� a foto de uma v�lvula muito usada

Vendo essa foto, � f�cil imaginar por que as v�lvulas eram t�o
problem�ticas e caras: elas eram simplesmente complexas demais.<br>
<br>
Mesmo assim, na �poca, as v�lvulas eram o que existia de mais avan�ado,
permitindo que computadores como o ENIAC executassem, em poucos
segundos, c�lculos que um matem�tico equipado com uma calculadora
mec�nica demorava horas para executar.<br>
