<p style="text-align: justify;">O <strong>HOSPITAL DE BELÉM, </strong>em Londres, fundado em 1247, foi convertido ao <strong>“tratamento e cura dos lunáticos”</strong> (termo utilizado pelos historiadores) em 1547 por ordem o Rei Henrique VIII (o mesmo que decretou o <strong>Ato de Supremacia</strong>,
pelo qual desligou a Igreja inglesa da Igreja Católica, criando a
Igreja Anglicana, da qual o soberano inglês é o chefe). Seu nome deu
lugar à que se colocasse a alcunha de <strong>DEBLAN</strong> que é sinônimo de <strong>“Casa de Orates”</strong>, e que tem o mesmo significado de <strong>Manicômio </strong>ou de <strong>confusão desordenada.</strong>
Em certas ocasiões, o público em geral era autorizado a
visitar o hospital para se divertir às custas dos alienados.</p>
